In Japan, December 31 is called Omisoka.
At home, people spend a day cleaning the entire house. This is called cleaning all rooms, washrooms, bathrooms, entrances, around the house, and garden completely. The house in Japan is not so big, but it takes a whole day. After this, we watch the Kohaku Uta Gassen and hear the New Year’s bell.
Joya no kane (除夜鐘) is one of the annual events in Japanese Buddhism during the year-end and New Year’s holidays: the tolling of temple bells on December 31st (the night of New Year’s Eve) after the stroke of midnight. The temple bell is rung 108 times at most temples.
日本では12月31日を大みそかと言います。
家では1日かけて家全体を掃除します。それを大掃除と言います。部屋、洗面所、浴室、玄関、家の周り、庭をきれいにします。家は小さいですが一日かかります。そして紅白歌合戦を見て、年越しの除夜の鐘をききます。
除夜の鐘（じょやのかね）は、日本仏教にて年末年始に行われる年中行事の一つ。12月31日の除夜（大晦日の夜）の深夜0時を挟む時間帯に、寺院の梵鐘を撞（つ）くことである。除夜の鐘は多くの寺で108回撞かれる。
