In Japan, the second Monday of January is a National holiday as the Coming-of-Age Day. It used to be January 15th, but the date was changed some years ago. We celebrate becoming an adult. An adult is 20 years old, so we congratulate them on being 20. In the old days, many children died before they become 20 years old, so I think it was a celebration of being 20. Nowadays, the death rate has dropped, and if we define adulthood as having civic rights, we now have civic rights at the age of 18, so things have shifted a bit. In the ceremony for being an adult, we can see people wearing gorgeous and strange cloth in some towns as Party people.
日本では1月の第2週目の月曜日が成人式としてお休みになります。昔は1月15日でしたが、何年か前に日にちが変わりました。
成人とは大人という意味ですので、大人になったお祝いをするのです。大人とは20才なので、20歳になれておめでとうお祝いするものです。
昔は20才になるまでに多くの子供が死んでいたので、20日なっておめでとうだったのだと思います。今は死亡率も下がったし、成人を公民権を持つとすると、今は18歳で公民権をもてるので、少しずれてきています。
パリピの人が多く参加する成人式もあるようです。
